Week 9
llandaff cathedral

Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff
February 28th, 2.45pm

From central Cardiff, a walk north along the banks of the River Taff brings you to a mix of industrial and commerical developments clustered along the A48. To the west, you’ll see the spire of Llandaff Cathedral, a Church of Wales cathedral with a busy daily schedule. The following was recorded from just outside the main entrance to the building, as the Sunday Evensong bells ring out. You can also hear a few people walk past on their way to the service, and the wooden entrance door opening and closing.

Week 8
cathays cemetery

Cathays Cemetery, Cardiff
February 25th, 3.30pm

Standing in the northern section of Cathays Cemetery the A48 flows to my right, birds puncture the still air, and occasional trains between Cardiff Queen Street and the Rhymney Valley pass in sweeping drones in front of me.

Week 7
week 7 (a)

River Taff, Cardiff
February 16th, 4-5pm

This week consists of three recordings along the east bank of the River Taff, where it runs through Blackweir Woods on the northern perimeter of Bute Park. The first was recorded at a shallow pebbled area opposite the Sophia Gardens cricket ground (depicted in the photograph above). You can hear the water bubble over small rocks, as the river flows from right to left, and there’s a riffle pool to the left-hand side.

week 7 (b)

The second recording was taken close to where the majority of a tree has fallen into the river channel. You can hear the water gushing between the huge branches.

(6:53)

The final recording was made on slightly higher ground, and so the sound of water is less prominent. Instead you can hear what to my mind sounds like the end of winter and the beginning of spring: corvids are still roosting, but blackbirds are becoming more vocal.

Week 6
National Museum Cardiff

National Museum Cardiff
February 10th, 4pm

The following recording was made from the first floor level of the National Museum Cardiff, overlooking the ground floor cafĂ©. What are relatively recent introductions to the museum across its history – a coffee grinder, espresso machine, and industrial milk frother – really fill the open central area of the building with their specific sounds.
