Hebdomadal sound project: September 2016

Week 39

Starting from it being switched on, the following recording is of a projector recorded with an induction coil pick-up to capture the sound of electrical currents running through the main unit.

(3:05)

Setup: Induction coil pick-up to Sound Devices 702

Week 38
The Hayes, central Cardiff
September 22nd, 4.20pm

The Hayes is a busy pedestrianised shopping area in the centre of Cardiff. The following recording is from some seating near the Hayes Island snack bar.

(6:00)

Setup: 2 DPA 4060 lavalier mics in stereo position to Sound Devices 702

Week 37
Thunderstorm, central Cardiff
September 13th, 10.35am

A recording of quickly changing weather from the window of my office. An extractor fan creates a constant undertone for a thunderstorm – the first I’ve heard since living in Cardiff.

(12:30)

Setup: 2 DPA 4060 lavalier mics in stereo position to Sound Devices 702

Week 36
Train journey, Rhondda Cynon Taf
September 8th, 3.45pm

On a small (2 carriage) train near Trehafod, I recorded from the inside using a contact microphone pressed against metal sheeting (the strip of metal below the green interior in the picture above). You can here the train rattling along, accelerating, breaking, the doors opening, and trees scraping the windows at certain moments.

(4:40)

Setup: 1 mono contact microphone to Sound Devices 702
