Hebdomadal sound project: October 2013

Week 43
Calton Road, Edinburgh
October 28th

Recorded underneath a railway bridge that spans a junction on Calton Road, on a wet and windy evening. Water trickles through pipes running the length of the bridge, cars, pedestrians and a cyclist pass by, and a train thunders overhead.

Setup: 2 DPA 4060 lavalier mics in stereo position to Tascam DR-680

Week 42
Hope Park Square, Edinburgh
October 21st

This week’s recording is from within Hope Park Square – a small courtyard adjacent to the Meadows that houses private residencies, as well as Sleep Scotland, and IASH, a University of Edinburgh research centre. Recorded from the bench in the ‘photo below, you can hear joggers, cyclists, and tennis players in the Meadows, as well as an ominous drone that I think is a street sweeping truck.

Week 41
Central library, University of Edinburgh
October 14th

A composition of two recordings from inside the main library of the University of Edinburgh. The acoustics of the library is one of the main things I dislike about spending time in there.

Week 40
Sea wall, Granton, Edinburgh
October 6th

Granton belies the notion that Edinburgh was never an industrial city, having been an important site for quarrying, car manufacturing, and the movement of goods via its once-thriving harbour – a harbour now fairly docile with only a few small boats coming and going. I enjoy walking from the edge of Leith along the Firth of Forth shoreline, and along the sea walls of Granton towards Cramond. The following recording is from a long stretch of sea wall that runs north from the harbour, where waves break and bubble as they sink into the gaps between stones:

Further along the wall stands a small derelict building. It is possible to walk underneath the eastern flank where concrete beams support the structure. Because of the enclosed space from above and behind, the waves breaking here have a very different resonance:
