Hebdomadal sound project: October 2016

Week 43
Fountain, Welsh National War Memorial
October 26th, 6.50pm

At the centre of Alexandra Gardens in Cathays Park, stands a war memorial built in the late 1920s to commemorate Welsh soldiers who died in World War I. The following recording is of the water fountain that the memorial encloses.

Week 42
Cardiff Bay
October 20th, 5.25pm

In the first of two recordings from Cardiff Bay, people walk and cycle along a wooden pathway that stretches out along the front of the National Assembly of Wales. A small boat is started (the one to the right in the photograph above) at 4:38 and pulls out into the bay.

The second recording, from just in front of the Norwegian Church, captures water gently lapping against stone as the sun sets.

Week 41
Cardiff Castle
October 12th, 5.00pm

Taking advantage of Cardiff castle’s policy of free entry for the city’s residents and workers, I visit the castle relatively often. It’s worth it to get great views of the surrounding landscape. The following recording is from inside the Norman keep; this is a subtle recording, with the most prominent sound being the ringing of the 5pm bells from the nearby City Hall.

Week 40
Dock feeder canal, Bute Park
October 2nd, 5.30pm

Cardiff used to have an extensive network of canals (see, for example, here), but most have now been rerouted underground and so are out of sight and earshot. One section of the dock feeder canal (built in the mid-1800s to supply the docks with a constant supply of water) that runs along the eastern flank of Bute Park, is still very much accessible to the public. The following recording is from a small footpath that runs adjacent to the canal; you can hear water as it flows around and over a fallen tree (pictured above), people playing football in the park, and an aeroplane and some very vocal corvids overhead.
