Lustre 1.0, The Institute, Edinburgh, August-September 2012

During the last week of the 2012 Edinburgh Art Festival, I collaborated with Marta Poprawa and Ericka Duffy to produce an audio-visual-olfactory installation entitled ‘Lustre 1.0’, which combined sculptural forms, untreated field recordings, video, light, and scent. The installation was installed at The Institute gallery, Edinburgh, and screened at 10pm each evening between 24th August – 2nd September 2012. It was by far and away the most ambitious art installation that I have had the pleasure to work on. We produced a screen from folded tracing paper, onto which a 12 minute edited video was projected. The video was combined with edited field recordings, and at particular moments during each screening scents were introduced, using atomisers and ultrasonic misters, which corresponded with the audio and visual components. The screen was transformed into a light installation at The Institute when the screening was not taking place. I’d like to thank The Institute for their help and enthusiasm for the project, and New Media Scotland for their technical support.
